Dr. Carson will share the story of his remarkable life's journey from a frustrated, bad tempered inner-city youth to a world-renowned surgeon who revolutionized pediatric surgery and saved countless lives. We are thrilled to offer a speaker who echoes the mission of DeLaSalle – who embodies the possibilities available to our young people when they are given the support, education and encouragement they need to succeed.

Dr. Carson embodies the mission of DeLaSalle and exemplifies the possibilities available to our young people when they are given the support, education and encouragement they need to succeed.

Event History: This event, founded by Maureen Durwood and Sue Massman, is in honor of Marge Grant (who passed away in 2004), a prominent Kansas City philanthropist.  Her brother, Stan Durwood, was the founder of AMC Theatres and inventor of the multi-screen movie theatre.  Through their company, Marge was able to make a huge impact on the non-profit community in Kansas City, and especially DeLaSalle.  She was a generous, intelligent woman whose efforts helped raise millions of dollars to support the DeLaSalle mission.

The purpose of the Marjorie Durwood Grant Speaker Series is threefold:

  • Honor the dedication and philanthropic contributions of Marge Grant to DeLaSalle and our community,
  • Enrich the community through the presentation of speakers concerning education, youth and life in urban America, and
  • Highlight students who have been given a second chance and found success at DeLaSalle.
