Hilltop's Program Descriptions
Discovery
As offered at the Kobets High School, Hilltop utilizes this highly successful program. Each new student is required to participate in the Discovery program model training. Students develop many positive social skills necessary to succeed in school and life. Students learn effective team building skills, anger management techniques, transactional analysis, assertiveness training, problem solving skills and conflict resolution.
Day Student Program
Students from the Lee¹s Summit R-VII school who are deemed in need of the kind of active behavioral intervention that Hilltop is best suited to provide can participate in this program. Hilltop and Lee¹s Summit R-VII staff members have created specific criteria day students must meet before becoming eligible to return to a Lee¹s Summit school setting. Parents are kept abreast (via telephone) of their child¹s status while placed at Hilltop.
Sentenced to the Arts
Students receive instruction in vocal music, West African drumming, dance, the graphic arts, and poetry.
Tutoring Program
The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity provides an after-school tutoring program.
Counseling Options
The Metropolitan Organization provides sexual abuse counseling to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA). Drug abuse counseling is provided by the Change of Heart organization. anger management and general psychological counseling is offered by Research Mental Health.
School-to-Work
This component is part of every teacher¹s lesson planning process and Hilltop has a standing School-to-Work Committee that deals with pertinent issues affecting students¹ abilities to be successful in the workplace.
Math Lab
The Math Lab and the Skills Bank mathematics software permit the math instructor greater opportunities to successfully individualize instruction, assess individual student progress, and in the process minimize student frustration.
Behavior Intervention Strategic Team (BIST) Training Program
A program implemented to encourage teachers to conscientiously analyze personal behaviors that contribute to maladaptive student behaviors. With this program in place, referrals to the in-school discipline program are minimal and student involvement in learning is high.
